"Thumbs Up For Organic School Lunch" is not Vanessa's first publishing endeavor. While it is her first documentary, she has published four books on the Golden Phoenix Publishing website. The theme of all her endeavours are similar, how we can make changes in our daily lives that will impact the bigger picture of the global environment.

Golden Phoenix Publishing's books and now DVD's address this question, offering solutions answering the question, "What can I do to make a difference". The fact that you are reading this means you are one of those people. Golden Phoenix Arts goal is also to include music and other works of art that reflect the kinds of change needed today.

Humanity's past has overemphasized taking from the environment. The hope of the present is to give back and achieve a sustainable relationship with Mother Nature. Golden Phoenix aspires to encourage a greater awareness while creating works of art that inspire us all to do greater things. Let's work together to pass on a healthy, beautiful world and create the kind of natural, social and educational endowments that we would all want to grow up in in the future...

Filmmaker Bios:

Vanessa Ruddy: is a 'citizen of the world'. Born, in the City of Lights - Paris - of European and American parents, Vanessa has since lived on four Continents and has found beauty everywhere on this planet. While gleaning many lessons in cultural and natural diversity, Vanessa has been exposed to Western and Eastern approaches to religion, philosophy, and lifestyles beginning at a young age. Now settled in the Pacific Northwest, Vanessa has raised two boys. In following their careers in education, she was haunted by the effects of contemporary notions of progress on children and the natural world which led her to speak out as an advocate for meaningful change.

When asked, "What do you like about making documentary films?" Vanessa says, "Videos are powerful tools for getting a message out to as many people as possible. They can be more quickly developed than a book, and, in a busy world, people are more likely to invest the time needed to view them. Besides, I've always liked photography. A film is a living photograph and music can be added for more ambiance. Documentaries are about real life."

Thumbs Up for Organic School Lunch!

Thumbs Up for Organic School Lunch

In 2001, parent Vanessa Ruddy approached the local school district Child Nutrition Supervisor with concrete ideas about how to significantly improve the school lunch program. Working together with the supervisor, school principal and kitchen staff, supported by caring parents and teachers, an organic choice salad bar was setup to better the health and enjoyment of students and school staff alike.

`Thumbs Up` makes the case for why an organic choice salad bar was setup at Lincoln Elementary School and why all other Olympia, Washington District schools implemented a similar program based not only on Lincoln's success but numerous other parents wanting to improve the eating habits of their children. This video explains why organic foodstuffs are superior to conventional `Green Revolution` products and will show you how to adopt a similar program in your own school district.

Like many worthwhile things, Lincoln's organic salad bar came with a price. What price was that? The sacrifice of such indispensible items as plastic forks, spoons, and blood sugar level overload desserts. Improving your children's school lunch offerings will also come with a price - the sacrifice of some time and effort doing something to change your children's world for the better.
